  14.         <text><span class="style42"></span><span class="style12">PAPUA NEW GUINEA</span><span class="style14"></span><span class="style42">Official name:</span><span class="style13"> The Independent State of Papua New Guinea</span><span class="style42">Member of: </span><span class="style13">UN, Commonwealth, Apec</span><span class="style42">Area: </span><span class="style13">462840 km2 (178704 sq mi)</span><span class="style42">Population: </span><span class="style13">3920000 (1993 est)</span><span class="style42">Capital: </span><span class="style13"> Port Moresby 193000 (1990 census)</span><span class="style42">Other major city: </span><span class="style13">Lae 81000 (1990 census)</span><span class="style42">Languages: </span><span class="style13">English (official), Pidgin English, Motu and over 700 local languages</span><span class="style42">Religions: </span><span class="style13">Roman Catholic (33%), various Protestant Churches (nearly 60%)</span><span class="style42">GOVERNMENT</span><span class="style13">A 109-member Parliament is elected for five years by universal adult suffrage. The Governor General ΓÇô the representative of the British Queen as sovereign of Papua New Guinea ΓÇô appoints a Prime Minister who commands a majority in Parliament. The PM, in turn, appoints a Cabinet, which is responsible to Parliament.</span><span class="style42">GEOGRAPHY</span><span class="style13">Broad swampy plains surround Papua New GuineaΓÇÖs mountainous interior, which rises to Mount Wilhelm at 4509 m (14 493 ft). </span><span class="style42">Climate: </span><span class="style13">The country experiences a tropical climate with high temperatures and heavy monsoonal rainfall.</span><span class="style42">ECONOMY</span><span class="style13">Over 80% of the labor force is involved in agriculture ΓÇô mainly subsistence farming ΓÇô although agricultural exports include coffee, cocoa and coconuts. The mainstay of the economy is minerals, including large reserves of copper, gold and petroleum. </span><span class="style42">Currency: </span><span class="style13">Kina.</span><span class="style42">HISTORY</span><span class="style13">The first inhabitants of New Guinea came from Indonesia around 50000 BC. European colonization began in 1828 when the Dutch claimed West New Guinea. A British protectorate, established in the southeast in 1884, was transferred to Australia (1906) and renamed Papua. Northeast New Guinea came under German administration in 1884, but was occupied by Australian forces in 1914. From 1942 to 1945 Japanese forces occupied New Guinea and part of Papua. In 1949 Australia combined the administration of the territories, which achieved independence as Papua New Guinea in 1975. Bougainville island, a major source of copper, attempted to secede (1990ΓÇô92). Fighting on the island decreased in 1992 and peace talks began, but the dispute continues.</span></text>
